The Silent Sounds
A Poem by Sophia Witcomb
And so, I close my eyes to listen
To whispered words too hard to say aloud
And so, I open my heart to listen
To a soul that I wish would cry aloud

Into the silence
          which omits
                   oppressing sound

And so, I close my eyes to listen
To secrets shared without revision
And so, I open my heart to listen
To faith which warmly, silently pounds

When we need a harsh awakening
A reminder to listen to the silent sounds

There’s a need to cry out, cry out, to let it show
But now               I know

It is the silence
which permits
the clearest sound

So, whisper words too hard to say aloud
To those who won’t hear revised lies when truths resound
To those who kindle faith, who won’t drown you in their sound
To those who, from soul to soul, can share the silent sounds
